YES Prep and Teach For America (TFA) have a long history. Chris Barbic, our founder, was a 1992 TFA corps member and in 2006 YES began welcoming TFA corps members into our schools. Today the partnership is deeper than ever.
This year, Teaching Excellence (TE), our teacher development and alternative certification program, will support 75 TFA teachers who will be in 40 different YES, KIPP, and Spring Branch schools across the city. After they complete their TFA summer training, they’ll join the other approximately 200 TE teachers to continue their development. Our two organizations took two important steps this year to boost the support of our Houston teachers. First, all the corps members working with TE are together at one of two TFA training schools. Second, professional learning specialists from TE and TFA Institute staff met several times to make sure the training the teachers receive is rigorous and aligned so that the teachers’ transition into their schools is as seamless and successful as possible.
And given the deep ties between both organizations, it’s no surprise to see many YES faces among the TFA Institute staff this summer. Wanting to continue his own learning and leadership development, Bryan Reed, School Director of YES Prep North Central, is serving as a Curriculum Specialist at TFA’s Institute this summer. As Curriculum Specialist, his role is to facilitate all of the training on instructional best practices for the TFA teachers at his site, including all of the incoming YES teachers in Teach For America. There are eight YES staff members in total working with TFA this summer, including Craig Brandenburg and Alexa Miller, who are both leaders at YES and serve on the TFA Institute leadership team supporting all of the Curriculum Specialists, Literacy Specialists, and Corps Member Advisors working at the Houston TFA Institute this summer.
We’re excited for our continued partnership with TFA and our collective impact on student achievement and increased college readiness for the students of Houston!
