Future Houston Leaders from YES Prep!

YES Prep seniors had the opportunity to participate with students and leaders from across the city in the 2013 Youth Leadership Summit at Rice University today!  A huge thank you to the YES Prep leaders who helped plan and facilitate the day: Nella Garcia Urban, Managing Director of Talent Pipeline, and Dustin Peterson, Director or Leadership Development.  The students spent the day gaining:

  • Insight from established leaders who seek to engage, educate, and empower the next generation of rising leaders
  • The opportunity to network with like-minded rising leaders to inspire and positively impact our community
  • Knowledge about our local government and how students can become informed, involved and responsible global citizens
  • An understanding of how community organizations are shaping futures
  • A realization that with education and hard work, students can accomplish their dreams

Here are some of their takeaways from the day:

"I was very inspired by all of the speakers at today's forum. I learned that it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from, if you're working hard and doing what you love you'll be praised one day for your accomplishments" Joseph Flores (North Forest)

"I'm learning not to feel discouraged about my heritage or where I come from. I will always be proud and be open to grow." Jessica Ortiz (North Central) and Eunice Guillermo (East End)

"I learned that good isn't good enough. I plan to go back to school and work harder than I have been so I can reach my goals." Janice Nelson (North Forest)

"This experience has made me see that I'm unique, but I also belong to a community."
Junior Avalos (North Central)

"I'm more aware that I'm not the only one. I can relate to others that want to increase their leadership skills." Florencia Rangel (Southeast)

"I'm learning to not let negativity get me away from my goals. I will always strive to be successful!" Julian Casey (North Central)
