First-generation students receive academic counseling, research opportunities, summer internships, and more
San Antonio – Eleven students at Trinity University have become the latest McNair Scholars as part of a prestigious program that prepares participants for doctoral studies through research and related scholarly activities.
Named after the late physicist and Challenger shuttle astronaut Dr. Ronald E. McNair and funded by Trinity and a U.S. Department of Education grant, the McNair Scholars Program offers academic counseling, financial aid assistance, mentoring, research opportunities, seminars, paid summer internships, and graduate admissions guidance.
“Trinity's McNair alumni have achieved success at some of the nation's foremost graduate programs in a wide variety of academic disciplines, and we expect nothing less from our newest Scholars,” said Michael Soto, associate professor of English and McNair Scholars director at Trinity.
Since its inception at Trinity in November 2007, the program has served a total of 92 first-generation, low-income, and/or under-represented students. The new Scholars who began participation this fall are:
