A Message from Joe Greenberg, Board of Directors Chairman

I am writing to inform you of a transition in the leadership of YES Prep Public Schools.  CEO Jason Bernal has informed the Board of Directors that he will leave his role, effective after the end of this school year, to pursue other opportunities.
Jason’s talent, dedication and leadership over the past 17 years have played a key role in making YES Prep the exceptional organization it is today. In his four years as CEO, Jason has guided a rapid expansion in Houston to thirteen schools and over 9,000 low-income 6-12 graders whom YES Prep is preparing for success in college and beyond. In addition, under Jason’s leadership YES Prep’s outstanding teacher training and college counseling programs have grown to become national models. We speak for the entire YES Prep family in saying that Jason has left a tremendous legacy.
Following Jason’s departure, Mark DiBella will continue to oversee the day to day operations of our schools in his current role as Superintendent of Houston schools.  Mark has done an outstanding job as Superintendent for the past two years and we are grateful for his continued leadership.  In addition, the Board has named Ann Ziker, currently the Vice President of Advancement, to take on the new position of Executive Director. In this new role, Ann will manage YES Prep’s external affairs and work closely with Mark in the transition. Both Mark and Ann will report to the Board of Directors. The Board will immediately launch a national search for a new Chief Executive Officer to maintain YES Prep’s track record of exemplary outcomes for students.
As evidenced by our successful Senior Signing Day event, YES Prep is continuing to redefine Houston’s future. This spring, we will graduate more than 500 seniors who will attend colleges across the country. Nearly all will be the first in their families to attend college. In addition, hundreds of our alumni will graduate from college, ready to begin their careers. Next year, YES Prep will open two new schools in Houston. We owe Jason Bernal our deepest gratitude and appreciation for his role in bringing us to this point, and for positioning YES for continued success.
