YES Prep Northside students are participating in phone banks and community canvassing to increase the number of registered voters in their community. Their goal is to register 1,500 new voters and to encourage already-registered voters to cast their vote on or before November 8th. YES Prep Northside is working in partnership with non-partisan, non-profit Mi Familia Vota Education Fund and Go Neighborhoods.
“We want people to be informed on how to vote, so that we can increase Houston’s, and specifically the Northside community’s, voter turnout,” said Maureen Israel, School Director of YES Prep Northside.
Before calling voters, students learned about election participation. In 2012, for the last presidential election, only 45% of registered Northside community members voted. In the phone bank, students asked community members if they planned to vote. They then provided information about early voting and voting locations.
“I wanted to be involved with voter registration because I’m 16 and not able to vote,” Northside junior, Yamileth Carrillo said. “My mom has the opportunity, and I want to push her and others in the Northside community to exercise that right. I want voter registration to increase so that people can impact the future.”
