In the Student Support Series, we spotlight the great work of YES Prep’s Student Support Counselors (SSCs) and Deans of Students (DoSs) to provide YES Prep students with positive, educational experiences. We begin the series with Monica Osuna and Jaylee Lange of YES Prep North Central.
On September 27, National Voter Registration Day, Osuna held a Voter Registration Drive. As a voter registration deputy, she registered students and families to vote. “We wanted to expose students to the voting process and empower them to go out in society and be part of change,'” Osuna said.

To honor Hispanic Heritage Month, Osuna and Lange hosted Sabor Latino. Parents and staff brought their favorite dishes to share. There was music, dance, and student performances.
On October 12, YES Prep North Central hosted its second Boys to Men High School Conference. The conference featured guest speaker Angel Ponce of Houston’s Department for People with Disabilities, Juan Sazo, LMSW, who spoke about the development of the teenage brain, Christopher Diaz, LMSW, who presented on grit and perseverance, and Stevens Orozco, who presented on using social media to promote social change.
The SSCs hosted a Teacher Coffee Talk to support teachers with facilitating the new Blue Orange Time, small groups that meet each Wednesday morning in Community Circles. The SSCs worked with teachers on group dynamics, ice-breakers, and team-builders.
