On November 29, Dr. Alicia Nance delivered a charge to 270 of YES Prep’s Black young women: be unapologetically bold. The charge was part the Second Annual Sisterhood Summit, a day-long event intended to provide Black young women from across the district with the opportunity to build relationships with each other and with the over 50 mentors present from YES Prep and the community.
Throughout the day, the students attended sessions in which they learned about Black women in history and the influence these women have on the image of Black women today. Students also reflected on student achievement data and created action plans for demonstrating their Black brilliance. Additionally, they wrote encouraging letters to 7th grade girls at YES Prep Southside. At lunch, students visited with representatives from Halliburton, sororities, Legacy Health, Prairie View A&M University, and more. The day closed with a pinning ceremony that recognized the seniors.
