Northbrook Middle School is among the few schools across the nation selected as a Verizon Innovative Learning School. The Verizon Innovative Learning schools program equips students and teachers with personal tablets and Verizon 4G LTE connectivity so that learning continues outside the classroom. As a SKY partner, YES Prep Northbrook Middle School teachers and students will also participate in the program.
“This is an amazing opportunity to set students up for long-term success and college graduation,” stated Jeremy Jones, School Director at YES Prep Northbrook Middle School. “Through this program, students will have access to technology that will enhance their learning, personalize their interventions and enrichments, and connect them to the world.”
The Verizon Innovative Learning Schools initiative provides a full-time dedicated technology coach to train teachers on effectively integrating technology in all aspects of learning and across all subjects. Verizon provided the first training for YES Prep teachers on April 21, 2017.
“Students will be able to explore their subjects beyond the 50 minutes we get with them,” 6th grade science teacher, Regan Traister, said after the training.
Chris Henao was excited about the opportunity to better support his struggling readers. “I’m looking forward to recording my voice for low readers so they can listen as they read. We’ll also be able to get fonts on our tablets for students with dyslexia,” he said.
YES Prep’s goal is to quadruple the number of college-ready graduates by 2020. However, students will not be considered “college-ready” without 21st century skills such as the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, and share information from the internet. Through programs like Verizon’s Innovative Learning Schools, YES Prep students will build the 21st century skills that are fundamental for college and career success.
