On Thursday, November 16, YES Prep, in partnership with Citi and Girl Rising, hosted the first Girl Rising capstone exhibition. Girl Rising aims to change the way the world values girls and to ensure girls everywhere can be full and equal participants in society. YES Prep juniors in the Introduction to Rhetoric and Composition courses engaged in a Girl Rising curriculum and created capstone projects the addressed equal gender access to education. Some projects studied how girls’ access to education looked in particular countries, others connected with organizations involved in reducing human trafficking, and still others proposed ways that they could help. Students used creative media to present their projects– from video, to music, to visual arts.
Over 100 community members were present, including State Representative, Gene Wu, a representative from State Representative Shawn Thierry’s office, families, teachers, and more. Also present were community organizations, Tahirih Justice Center and Africa on My Back. After the project presentations, Kaycee Jennings, the Senior Producer for Girl Rising, moderated a panel of teachers and students. Girl Rising also showed some impact videos of the incredible work they’ve done across the country and in the world.
