Girls SOAR at White Oak Conference

YES Prep White Oak SOAR hosted its culminating conference for 177 8th-12th grade African-American girls from across the YES Prep system. SOAR stands for Sisterhood, Opportunity, Awareness, and Responsibility. Over the course of the year, 21 girls from White Oak have been preparing for this conference—learning about healthy relationships, building community and developing leadership skills so that they could, in turn, teach girls from other campuses.

At the conference, the White Oak girls facilitated sessions on Responsible Decision-Making, Owning Your Values, Adolescent Health & Wellness, and Restorative Practices. Additionally, they moderated an Empowerment Panel with local African-American professional women who discussed social justice, career decisions, and identity development.
