On Friday, October 12, 2018, 4,178 juniors and seniors from 13 YES Prep campuses and four KIPP Texas- Houston attended the twelfth annual College Fair. This year the college fair was hosted at Kingdom Building Center located in Southwest Houston. Each year the College Initiatives team works year round to put this event together. The College Initiatives team ensures that all YES Prep campuses and students have the support they need in navigating the transition from high school to college and campus to career.
120 local and national colleges under one roof
Juniors and seniors had the opportunity to meet with representatives from 120 colleges and universities from across the nation. During this time, they were able to learn more about specific colleges and universities that interest them and learn more about what they have to offer. By meeting with an admissions counselor, students personally engage with the representative that could potentially receive and read their admissions application.
Nationally renowned institutions such as Harvard College, Johns Hopkins University and Vanderbilt University, as well as local ones like Rice University, Houston Baptist University, and University of Houston were among the 120 colleges and universities that attended this year’s fair.
In regards to the benefits students reap from this event, Randi Lawrence Jones, Managing Director of College Initiatives, stated, “At YES Prep, we are committed to connecting our students and their families with colleges and universities that will empower them with the information they need to make the best decision about their college options.”
Of the 120 colleges and universities that participated in the college fair, 32 joined our students the following day at a more intimate event called “IMPACT Saturday” at YES Prep Southside Campus. These 32 colleges and universities are YES Prep IMPACT Partners. Through this “IMPACT” partnership the college/university agrees to meet the financial need of the student through a combination of scholarships, grants, work study, and possibly loans and YES Prep, in conjunction with the IMPACT Partner, identifies students who meet pre-determined admission criteria.
755 select students had the chance to meet more personally in small group settings with representatives from these partner institutions and learn about opportunities to attend these schools as an IMPACT Scholar.
IMPACT – Higher Education Partnership Program
