Valero Energy recently awarded a $4,800 grant to YES Prep East End in order to advance and expand the STEM educational programs and initiatives offered in the coming 2019-2020 school year.

Thanks to Valero Energy’s generosity, YES Prep East End will be able to purchase targeted technology and make equipment upgrades for 6th through 12th grade math and science classroom instruction. The campus will also purchase software subscriptions for ST Math, a blended learning program currently used by the Math department in 6th and 7th grade, and update the Vernier equipment used in Biology, AP Environmental Science, Environmental Science, Physics and Chemistry, allowing students to engage in more advanced lab work. Lastly, funds will be used to purchase more text preparation materials for STEM classes.

Valero Energy tours East End

Recently, two Valero Energy representatives, Lead Community Relations Specialist Michael Walter and Executive Secretary Doreen Anderson, joined our Advancement team for a tour of the East End campus. Two East End Student Ambassadors led the special guests to two science classrooms. The first was Mr. Bermudez’s 8th grade science class where students were testing the environmental preferences of pill bugs, often known as “rollie pollies”, using different kinds of food and beverages. The second stop was Ms. Tholstrup’s Environmental Systems class. Here, students were learning about the increasing lack of access to clean water around the world.

Impact on East End STEM Program

Aaron Simmons, YES Prep East End School Director, thanked Valero Energy and shared what this donation means to his East End Explorers, “This gift will be instrumental in increasing the access and quality of materials that our students interact with in their math and science courses at East End. Thanks to these additions, we will be better able to provide the classroom experiences and resources that our students wouldn’t otherwise have access to.”

Valero Energy is committed to giving back to the communities where its employees work and live, and with their refinery plant in the East End, YES Prep was the beneficiary of their commitment to education.
