Senior Spotlights: Brays Oaks, College Acceptance Season

In our Senior Spotlight Series, we follow YES Prep seniors as they set goals for their futures, apply for colleges, and make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. In this post, you’ll read where YES Prep Brays Oaks seniors Vannessa, José, and Fransia applied to college and how they felt during the college application process. When we first spoke to the seniors at the beginning of the year, they were still deciding where to apply.

What schools did you apply to?

Sam Houston State, UTSA, Lamar, U of H-Downtown, Texas Tech, UNT, and Texas State.

What’s your current dream school?

Sam Houston because of their criminal justice program.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

It was fun and easier than other people’s processes. I enjoyed writing the essays because I like writing, and I was looking forward to the acceptances.

Any big news yet?

I got into Sam Houston, which is my top choice.

What schools did you apply to?

Austin College, Texas Tech, U of H, College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University, Washington & Jefferson, Colorado College, and Bucknell.

What’s your current dream school?

Right now I’m thinking about St. Benedict because they are the ones reaching out the most. They text me, and I talk to the representatives and students I know there.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

For me, it was emotional. I have to write essays about my past and I don’t have the brightest past. It was emotional to think about who I am now, who I was, and how I’ve been developing throughout the years.

Any big news yet?

I’ve received acceptances from all except Colorado College. I’m still waiting.

What schools did you apply to?

U of H, College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University, Austin College, Abilene Christian, University of Alabama, UTSA, Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Rhodes, Sewanee, Rice, and one more.

What’s your current dream school?

Rice is my dream school because I like that it’s a small university that is dedicated to their students and where students grow academically. It’s also close to home.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

It was kind of a headache because of the writing. I have a language barrier between writing and thinking– that’s what my English teachers always say. I think in Spanish and then write in English. Also, sometimes, when they ask me to write about myself, I like to write about something else.

Any big news yet?

I got accepted to U of H, Abilene Christian,  College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University, and University of Alabama.
