Senior Spotlight Series: Southwest, College Application Season

In our Senior Spotlight Series, we follow YES Prep seniors as they set goals for their futures, apply for colleges, and make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. In this post, you’ll read where YES Prep Southwest seniors Gerardo, Jose, and Mayra applied to college and how they felt during the college application process. When we first spoke to the seniors at the beginning of the year, they were still deciding where to apply.

What schools did you apply to?

Sam Houston, SFA, University of Texas-Arlington, UTSA, University of St. Thomas, Midwestern State, and Texas State.

What’s your current dream school?

Texas State if the financial aid package permits. I love the culture. I like that it’s not too far away from home, but not too close either.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

Stressful, but it was something I enjoyed. It involved learning how to do new things, managing my own time, and being more responsible. It was exciting to wait for news.

Any big news yet?

I got accepted to all, but I’m still waiting on UTSA and UT-Arlington. Midwestern State and University of St. Thomas awarded me scholarships based on SAT scores.

What schools did you apply to?

U of H, UT Austin, Texas A&M, Texas State, Trinity, George Washington University, Boston, and Bucknell.

What’s your current dream school?

Trinity and GW. They both offer really good medical programs, and I love that GW is in the capital. Trinity offers a JAMP program (Joint Admission Medical Program). Really, the decision will be down to financial aid. We’ll find out if we are IMPACT scholars on February 15.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

It wasn’t stressful to me. Sometimes it was just finding that motivation to do essays and making sure you have your teachers and counselors check them.

Any big news yet?
Both U of H and Texas State offered me a full academic ride.

What schools did you apply to?

U of H, Trinity, Claremont McKenna, Colgate, University of Rochester, Rhodes College, and Washington & Jefferson.

What’s your current dream school?

Trinity, Claremont, and Colgate. They all offer a variety of classes because I don’t know what I want to pursue yet; there’s flexibility for changing my major. Colgate felt like a completely new environment.

What was the process of applying to schools like?

It was all right. There was a lot of work that you had to do. But as long as you had your schedule, got feedback, and stayed organized, it was okay.

Any big news yet?

U of H and Washington & Jefferson accepted me.
