On August 4th and 5th, admissions representatives from 22 colleges and universities visited YES Prep Spindletop’s Center for Teaching Excellence as part of the annual IMPACT Institute. The visiting colleges and universities are IMPACT partners, highly-selective institutions that agree to provide structured support and meet full demonstrated financial need for admitted scholars. The IMPACT program began in 2006 as a way to boost college persistence for YES Prep students.
On the first day of Institute, the college representatives learned more about YES Prep, shared best practices for recruiting YES students, updated YES Prep staff members on the IMPACT process at each of their institutions, and suggested advising techniques to ensure students are putting forward a more competitive application.
On the second day, 200 IMPACT-eligible students and their families had the opportunity to network with the admissions representatives, learn more about the partner institutions, and learn more about the college application process.
“I come from a low-income community, so I’ve always thought I wouldn’t be able to go to whatever college I want. But after Institute, I realized I have a lot more options,” said Sarajane Baez, a senior at YES Prep Southeast. “The financial support offered by IMPACT schools will give me the opportunity to explore the world and gain more perspectives.”
