On September 28, 2017, YES Prep hosted the dedication ceremony for the Spindletop Center for Teaching Excellence– a space for YES Prep’s first-year teacher development and certification program. The Spindletop Center for Teaching Excellence was built with an unprecedented $1,000,000 gift from Spindletop Charities. Since it opened this fall, it has been the site for YES Prep events such as the YES Prep Leadership Summit and the 5+ Fiesta, a dinner honoring teachers who have committed five or more years to YES Prep. The building also served as the hub of donations and resources for families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
CEO Mark DiBella welcomed guests to the dedication ceremony and introduced Constance White, Executive Director of Spindletop Charities. White spoke about the 20-year relationship between YES Prep and Spindletop Charities, which supported YES Prep as it added its first modular buildings to YES Prep Southeast, expanded to YES Prep North Central, built a library at YES Prep White Oak, and more. White also shared stories of former YES Prep students, including Rosa Gutierrez, a YES Prep alumna who graduated from Teaching Excellence’s teacher preparation program and is now a teacher at YES Prep. The program included remarks by former Board President of Spindletop Charities, Dave L. Stover, Chairman, President and CEO of Noble Energy Inc., and current Board President, Lee M. Tillman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marathon Oil Corporation. YES Prep Board Chair, Mark Gregg thanked Spindletop Charities and unveiled the plaque. The program concluded with remarks by alumna and teacher, Rosa Gutierrez, and two YES Prep students.

About Teaching Excellence
The Teaching Excellence program was developed by YES Prep in 2004 and is now a hallmark of the YES Prep program. Over the course of a school year, Teaching Excellence teachers complete 310 hours of intensive online, video, and in-person training. Teachers are paired with an instructional coach who guides them through program components, monitors their progress, and ensures that they complete the program. Teaching Excellence also serves new teachers from KIPP Houston, Spring Branch ISD, BakerRipley, and Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success, expanding our impact beyond YES Prep.
