On April 23, 180 YES Prep students from across the district united at the Montrose Center for the second annual Pride Plus Summit. All students attended a session called “How to Be Someone’s ‘Reason Why Not'” on preventing suicide in LGBTQ youth. Participants then had the opportunity to select two choice sessions on the following topics:
- Coming Out
- Out Online: Internet & Social Media Safety
- Queer in College Panel
- Gender Beyond the Binary
- So You Want to Start a GSA?
- LGBTQ History
- Know Your Rights
- Healthy Relationships
- Healthy Habits
- Be a Beacon: Representation and Affirmation for LGBTQ People of Color
Throughout the event, students made connections with peers from other campuses through small group discussion, human bingo, a photo booth, face-painting, and a book raffle. At lunch, students attended a resource fair with representatives from HRC, Legacy Community Health, PFLAG, the ACLU, Crimestoppers, the Montrose Center, and Gender Infinity.
Head of Schools, Charlie Schmidt, closed the event with an affirmation: “You are beautiful, talented, creative, and courageous just as you are… Instead of thinking ‘what’s wrong with me,’ I hope you spend the rest of your days celebrating ‘what’s right with me.'”
